Dear President George W. Bush,
Dear Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in Japan,

Yokosuka Should Not Be the Home Port for the Nuclear-Powered Carrier.

The news on the 28th October told us that the governments of Japan and the United States have reached at the final stage of arrangement for the nuclear-powered carrier to be deployed in Yokosuka in 2008 as a following warship of the Kitty Hawk.  Yokosuka is scheduled to be its home port.
We had already had a fear that the construction to expand the twelfth berth of the US Navy base would be a step toward the deployment of the nuclear-powered carrier.  Our fear turns to be realistic now.  We do not want Yokosuka to be used as a home port of the nuclear-power carrier.
In 1988 Professor Jackson Davis of University of California estimated that people and children in Yokosuka would be heavily radiated and approximately thirty million people of the metropolitan area would be seriously damaged, concluding our commissioned assessment of the supposed damage in the case of the accident of the nuclear reactor while the vessel called at Yokosuka.  The impact of a radioactive accident lasts for decades.  Hibakushas, A-bombs victims, of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are still suffering from radiation sickness.  A vast reach of Chernobyl is still uninhabitable due to serious radiation caused by a nuclear plant accident of 1986.  The US government says that a nuclear-powered vessel is safe.  How could we trust their words when we heard the carrier Stennis stranded in the Gulf of San Diego in November, 1999?  The seawater intake for cooling was blockaded with sand to stop a pump for circulating coolant.  Both of the reactors of the vessels were urgently halted at the last instant.  We have heard of other accidents.
We have been campaigning against home-porting of the nuclear-powered carrier and over four hundred-thousand people have subscribed a petition.  Mayor Kabaya of Yokosuka City, Governor Matsuzawa of Kanagawa Prefecture, and the City Council of Yokosuka have all clearly stated against home-port deployment of the nuclear?powered carrier to Yokosuka.  The local governments and people won’t welcome your nuclear-powered carrier.
Here we demand that you stop deploying a nuclear-powered carrier to Yokosuka.
    Thank you.
